The International Programme
The Health Care Standards Unit did offer a unique quality improvement process designed specifically for the health service of the country in which they were working. This could be applied to both public and private hospitals/health care organisations.
The accreditation programme consisted of a set of standards that covered all aspects of health care provision, together with an organisational development and assessment process leading to external peer review and an award of accreditation. Although each programme was tailored to a specific service, the overall process was similar. (Click here to visit Audit page and click here to see example standards from international standards).
The programme incorporated relevant features of quality programmes from other sectors such as EFQM and ISO9001:2000. The standards were based on the UK Law Courses and programmes but were customised to reflect local requirements including organisational structures, service configurations, laws, culture and practices.
The options included:
implementation for individual services or departments, or by a whole organisation
focused on specific issues such as clinical governance or risk management to suit the clients' needs
working solely on a developmental basis, towards HCSU accreditation or joint HCSU accreditation and ISO certification

- Child and adolescent mental health services
- Learning disability services
- Hospice & palliative care services
- Nursing and residential care homes
- Cruise Ships
- Consultancy and training services
